Schools
I enjoy spending time in schools. I am most frequently asked to come as
a visiting author and literacy consultant. However, I also do motivational
assemblies, student leadership training, graduations, baccalaureates,
and maturation clinics.
As a visiting author
I am comfortable speaking to the entire school about the writing process
in an assembly. I am also happy to work with students on their writing
in groups or individually and do demonstration lessons in classrooms.
As
a literacy consultant I am most frequently asked to conduct inservice
on the various components of balanced literacy. My experience in New Zealand
has enriched my ability to teach and train about reading and writing to
children, shared reading and writing, guided reading and writing, reading
and writing workshops, independent reading and writing, assessment, motivation,
classroom management, comprehension, and content-area literacy.
When I speak in assemblies
it is usually on the topic of self-esteem, acting and not reacting, or
preparing for the future. I have been invited to present during many weeks
that have focused on saying no to drugs and violence or in orientations
at the beginning of the school year. When I have spoken to student leadership
conferences and graduations I have spoken on service, reaching out to
others, or tailored my remarks to match the theme that has been selected.
Beyond school inservice and assemblies, I have been the keynote speaker
at the national conferences of the Golden Key Honor Society, Education
Planning Solutions, America's Junior Miss Scholarship Program and many
state student council leadership, gifted and talented, and Head Start
conferences. I have presented maturation clinics for both boys and girls
throughout the mountain west. The content of my maturation clinics follows
Utah's suggested curriculum. |
